Alright, NazNite is Friday, September 3rd this year, so keep that Friday and Saturday open in your calendars.

Haven’t gotten all the details ironed out yet, but I wanted to let you guys know the date- more info to come!

Hey guys,

I was planning on being back for this Sunday (July 25) but my plans were changed a little.

Needless to say, Shane will be covering sunday school for me, and Sunday evening services will be combined with the adults again.  Sorry about the change- I should be in town for a while once I finally get back!

KC2010 Friday Update

Well, we are all but wrapped up here in Kansas City.  I can honestly say that KC2010 has been by far the best youth trip that I have been a part of.  There has been a spirit of camaraderie here that I hope will last long past this week.  Lives were changed, hearts were opened, people were touched, and the Spirit of God moved among us all week.

Today we let the kids sleep in after our night of being homeless.  We had a late doughnut breakfast here in the dorm and then headed to Oceans of Fun- a water park in KC.  We had a blast, and I looked pretty awesome in a bathing suit. The park was actually much nicer than I expected, and I could have stayed another couple of hours…  There aren’t any pics from the waterpark because it’s pretty difficult to keep an iphone in your pocket while riding water slides and jumping waves in the wave pool.

We came back to the dorm and ate barbecue sandwiches from one of the greatest bbq places in the world- Oklahoma Joe’s.  It was the first time this week that the kids ate OK Joes… for us adults, it was #4…

We then were treated to a concert here on campus.  Our own Jonathon played a short set on the piano which included songs like “Desperado” and “Don’t Stop Believin.”  After Jonathon played, our week’s worship leader, Eric Vinson played some of his original music for us.  It was a relaxing time and the kids loved it.

From there, we hit the beach volleyball court once again, and proceeded to dominate any and all players from Jasper, TN.  We are beasts.

We’re packing up and hitting the hay… gonna hit the road right after our 7:45 breakfast and start heading home.  Please keep us in your prayers as we head back down to Texas.

Not many pics today, but here are a few anyway.

Eric playing at the concert.  He’s tall.

Group picture serious…

And group picture funny…

KC2010 Thursday Update

Sorry This post didn’t make it up last night, but after reading this update I think you’ll let it slide this once 🙂

Thursday was an absolutely wonderful day.  We were all at the same worksite, and it was cool to have everyone together in one spot.  We were working at another site that Hillcrest is trying to get fixed up to use for their residents.  Lots of work ranging from sanding to painting to getting rid of moldy sheetrock to landscaping outside- and plenty of other things.  Our kids knocked out that place and have it looking great.

A lady named Brandy is the manager of the site we were working out.  The amazing thing that I found out was that Brandy had actually graduated from Hillcrest’s 90 day program this past November.  To hear her tell the story of how she was homeless and worked through the program- and to know that 6 months later she was actually helping other homeless people as her profession.  Those are amazing stories.

After our workday, we made lunch bags and water bottles and drove around downtown Kansas City giving them out to homeless people on the street.   Brendon even got a chance to pray over a group of homeless men.

We ate dinner on site, and had another great dialogue service outside on the site- which ended with communion. We stressed the community aspect of communion- sharing with others’ joys and also with their sufferings.  We shared joys with the residents Tuesday night at the graduation.  Last night we shared in their suffering (in a very small way) by being homeless for a while.  Right after communion, we surprised our kids by telling them that they were gonna be outside for a while.  We had cardboard and duct-tape and we all had to build shelters for the evening.  Without going into much detail here, we stayed out until about 12:30am.  It caused us to really think about the reality that many people live with on a daily basis.

Today we are hitting up a waterpark.  Should be able to give an update tonight.

Enjoy the pics

KC2010 Wednesday Update

Third workday in the books.  Big day, because it was the final day of our 3 worksites in 3 days rotation that the teens were doing.  Tomorrow, we will actually be all together at one worksite, which will be fun and chaotic.

Not really much new- like i said, lots of repetition the last few days since the adults stayed at the same worksites while the kids rotates around.  I have now spent one workday with all of our kids, though- which has been great.

There are a couple of things that I could mention that I haven’t yet.  First of all, the food has been crazy awesome.  Not the MNU, food- although they have a solid pie situation in their cafeteria.  A Hillcrest worker is married to a caterer, and she has been bringing our lunches to us on our worksites.  After standard sandwiches on Monday, she followed those us with 2 kinds of ridiculously good pasta yesterday, and an assortment of grilled foods today.  We’re talking burgers, hotdogs, brats, corn casserole, salad, 2 kinds of brownie bar thingies.   It’s all been amazing, but it makes me want to take an afternoon nap.

Maybe one of the bigger surprises is the way all of the kids from the different churches are interacting.  You honestly can’t tell who goes to the same church because they are having a great time mixing together.  No long distance relationships are forming that I know of though.

I’ll finish today’s update by talking a little about our nightly services.  We start with some worship songs by the famous Eric Vinson.  Then we are experimenting with a dialogue in place of a lesson/sermon.  We ask them questions that fall into three different categories.  We start with the past, and ask things like “how are you different now than you were 2 weeks ago?”  or “Have you seen anything this week that has changed any preconceived notions you had before?”  The second topic is the present, which includes topics like “How did you see God moving today?”  and “Is God doing anything in you right now?”  We close with the future.  We ask things like “How has this changed your future?”  “What are you taking back with you from this mission trip experience?”

Tonight’s service was simply incredible.  The group opened up in a way that I don’t think I’ve ever seen a group of teenagers open up with each other.  They are really wrestling through some of these tough questions and it has been amazing to hear the way God has showed up this week.  I cant explain how great the discussion was tonight- just know that I am blown away by these kids.

Please keep us in your prayers tomorrow and tomorrow night, because it is going to be a looooong day and night, but I’m excited about what we have planned!

As usual, we end with daily pictures.  Since I’ve had everyone at my site now, everyone should be represented now.

Colin, Brendon, and Jonathon are deck staining/sealing machines

Apparently they also really hate wearing shirts.  I think they’re looking for mission trip love.

Also, they’re six year olds.

Kate and Jenny spent the morning organizing and stocking a massive food pantry

Jenny may have stolen this jar of pickles from a food pantry.  We’re praying for her.

Justin and Josh cleaning an apartment.

You’re not going to believe this, but Jonathon found something with keys that he likes playing with.

Baker.  Enough said.

Visits to the beach volleyball court have become a crowd favorite.  Here, Brendon is getting some last second coaching from Noah

The view from the back of our service/dialogue thingy that I talked about earlier

Love you guys!!
