KC2010 Tuesday Update

Wow.  It has been a long, but great day.  We are exhausted.

During the day, our worksites looked similar to yesterday.  Adults and college students stay put at the three sites throughout the week, and the teens are rotating through all three.

After our workday, we split into groups again.  Some people handed out bags of groceries to low-income neighborhods, and others prayer-walked through the city.

From there, we met at one of our sites for the graduation celebration.  This was an awesome event.  Three different families graduated tonight and it truly was a privilege to share this moment with them.  After hearing testimonies, stories, and whatever else they had to say, we were able to ask the residents and graduates any questions that we had about their past or homelessness in general.  We had a great discussion with them.

On the way home, we sang our hearts out and had a fun time of fellowship.  Marvin Gaye may or may not have been involved.  Enjoy some pics.  Also, our muffler situation has been contained.  Booyah.

Shelvie and Alexa are great at pretending to do work when cameras are around

Kayla spent her morning staining a deck.  Also, she said “you’re not putting this on the website are you?” right after I took this picture.

More staining

And even more staining

This is the celebration- people are just hanging out here

These are some of the residents and graduates sharing insights about their experiences

Tomorrow, I will have our third group of kids with me tomorrow- so if you havent seen pictures of your babies yet- they will be on tomorrow night!

KC2010 Monday Update

The first workday is over, and all went relatively smoothly.  Some “no whining” buttons were awarded, but it was more because I was just itching to give some away.

After an early breakfast, we all met together at one of our worksites- the Hillcrest Thrift Store.  After some instructions, we split into three workgroups.  Two groups left to go to some apartment complexes to do work, while one group stayed at the thrift store to work there.

Our kids did a broad range of things today.  We painted, mulched, landscaped, pulled weeds, tore out sheet rock, sorted clothes, cleaned, and a host of other things.  At the end of the day, we met back at the thrift store to debrief and then head back to the college.

After dinner at the college (which has a rabbit infestation), we had a service in our dorm basement.   Eric Vinson led worship, and Wes and Zack led a dialogue with the kids about what we are seeing God do in our group this week.

Once the service was over, we had an admissions counselor and some students lead us in a giant outside game of “Snuff the Candle.”  The details of that game are too long to type out, so you’ll have to ask a teen about it.  Here’s a hint:  I’m soaking wet as I sit and type this right now.

The kids are now enjoying a few more minutes of free time before bedtime.  Everyone is safe, healthy, and relatively happy.  Enjoy some pictures from our day.

Just a quick update tonight.

We made it, despite our bus’s best efforts to stop us. We overcame a broken muffler bracket last night and a lack of air conditioning and a functional door during stretches today. Despite setbacks, the kids were absolutely awesome and took everything in stride. We arrived right at 5:30 pm and got settles in nicely.

Tomorrow us an early morning and we’ll be split up at three differents sites all over town.

Updates and pictures tomorrow night.

It’s almost here…

I need to have a final instructional meeting for all teens and parents of teens that are going to KC with me.  This meeting will be next Wednesday (June 23) night at 7pm (right after church) in the sanctuary.

If you have any questions or issues that you want to make sure I address, send them my way at youthpastorwes@gmail.com

If you can’t make the meeting for some reason, let me know and I will make sure that you get all the info you need.  You should probably just make sure to be there though  🙂

VBS Practice during PM Church Tomorrow

Tomorrow night our schedule will be a little different- there won’t be any regular services here are the church because of a local mission service that we are participating in at the Lufkin church.

HOWEVER- Mrs. Mel has asked that those teens that are helping with VBS meet with her here at the church during that time.  So, if you are willing to help out with VBS week, be at the children’s chapel during normal church time tomorrow night.
